TOGETHER WE GROW

Food freedom begins in the soil beneath your feet.

From The Roots is a volunteer-led initiative rooted in the belief that every home, school and community deserves access to fresh, self-grown food. We support new gardens, share free seeds, and walk alongside growers at every stage of their journey — from the first seed to the first harvest.

WHY WE EXIST

Food freedom is not a privilege — it is a right. When people grow their own food, they reconnect with the earth, reclaim their sustenance, and build communities that are more resilient, more connected, and more alive.

From The Roots began as one garden and one conviction: that knowledge about food comes from the roots of experiencing it yourself. It has grown into a network of hundreds of gardens, thousands of seeds shared, and a growing community of growers across the United States committed to feeding themselves and their neighbours.

We believe in the garden as a classroom, a community space, and a quiet act of resistance.

THREE PROGRAMS
ONE MISSION

From The Roots - Adopt a School Garden, educate children in gardening and nature. Empower kids towards self sustenance

ADOPT A SCHOOL GARDEN

Empowering children to grow their own food — one school garden at a time. We provide seeds, resources and guidance to establish and sustain school gardens that serve as living classrooms.

Every home needs to have a garden, help home owners produce one crop they can switch away from buying in grocery stores

NEW HOME GARDENS

Every grower starts somewhere. We support first-time home gardeners with a free seed package and the resources to get started — whether you have a backyard, a balcony, or a windowsill.

SEED LIBRARY

Seeds are community wealth. Our seed library — including our hub at the King County Newcastle Library — provides free seeds for community use, keeping heirloom and open-pollinated varieties alive and accessible

WHAT WE HAVE BUILT TOGETHER

Numbers tell part of the story. The rest lives in the gardens.

     - Hundreds of gardens established across home, school and community settings

     - Thousands of seed packets distributed — and still counting

     - A registered seed hub with the Cooperative Gardens Commission

     - Active across Washington State and growing nationally

     - Supported by seed donors across the US

FOUNDER NOTE

From The Roots grew from a personal conviction — that the most powerful thing any of us can do for the planet is grow something. I am Poornima Magadevan, a technologist turned gardener turned steward of food freedom. My own garden, Punarvana, is where I live the mission every day — experimenting, observing, and learning alongside the same community I hope to serve.

This initiative is entirely volunteer-led and community-driven. Every seed we share, every garden we support, every child who learns to grow food — that is the work.

Thank you for being part of it.

JOIN THE MISSION

From The Roots runs entirely on volunteer energy and community generosity. There are many ways to get involved — whether you have seeds to share, time to give, or a garden to start.
