From The Roots is a community-focused nonprofit rooted in the belief that when people come together — around a garden, a story, a canvas, or simply each other — something lasting grows. We build programs that connect, educate, and support communities across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
WHY WE EXIST
From The Roots began as one garden and one conviction — that the act of growing something, whether food, a story, or a creative practice, has the power to transform a person and a community.
What started as a food freedom initiative has grown into something broader: a nonprofit that brings people together through nature, creativity, learning, connection, and well-being. Our programs are rooted in partnership, built on generosity, and sustained by community.
We believe that belonging grows best when it is tended — one seed, one story, one person at a time.

FROM THE FOUNDER
From The Roots grew from a personal conviction — that when people come together around something living, something lasting grows with them.
I am Poornima Magadevan — a technologist, author, artist, and steward based in the Pacific Northwest. What began as a garden and a seed library has grown into a multi-program nonprofit bringing together nature, creativity, learning, connection, and well-being.
Every program we run is built on partnership — with Punarvana, with Poorni's Artistry, with Living Words, and most importantly with the communities we serve. This is volunteer-led, community-driven work.
